Bolsonaro’s legend elected 10 mayors in municipalities with more than 200 thousand voters in the 1st round; another 23 go to the 2nd round
The PL (Liberal Party) elected 10 mayors in the 1st round of municipal elections this Sunday (Oct 6, 2024) in G103, a group of cities with more than 200 thousand voters. The result, still without a 2nd round, is already the party’s best since at least 2000.
In the 2020 election, Valdemar Costa Neto’s party elected only 2 mayors in the group of large cities: Rodrigo Ashiuchi (Suzano-SP) and Anderson Ferreira (Jaboatão dos Guararapes-PE). Now in 2024, in addition to the names already elected, 23 candidates from the party will compete in the 2nd round on October 27th.
The names elected by the PL this Sunday include JHC (in Maceió) and Tião Bocalom (Rio Branco), in the capitals. Names like Emília Corrêa (Aracaju), Eder Mauro (Bethlehem) and Bruno Engler (Belo Horizonte).
The president’s PT Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvaoccupies 8th place in this ranking of elected officials in the largest cities, with only 2 city halls won, tied with the PSDB and PSB.
The scenario in G103, a group of 103 largest cities in Brazil, is important because they are where 38.8% of the country’s voters are concentrated. It is in these locations where it is possible to have a 2nd round, when no candidate obtains at least 50% plus 1 of the votes in the initial round on October 6th. Read the full list of 103 cities.

PL ADVANCE
This year’s municipal election will be the 1st after Bolsonaro’s affiliation with the PL, in 2021. In 2020, the party elected 344 mayors across Brazil. Of these, only 2 were in large cities – those with today more than 200 thousand voters.
In the 2022 general elections, despite having lost the presidential election, the PL elected 99 federal deputies, becoming the largest bench in the Chamber of Deputies. In the Senate, it is the 2nd largest force, behind the PSD, Gilberto Kassab.
Valdemar and Kassab are fighting a war, sometimes silent, sometimes declared, for space in politics. In May, during the federal deputy’s birthday party Antonio Brito (PSD-BA), Valdemar said “I’m going to put the iron in you” to the PSD chief, in reference to the municipal elections.
PL congressmen have ascended the tone in the weeks that anticipated the 1st round asking that its electorate not vote for PSD candidates. The main complaint is the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), not advance the requests for impeachment of STF (Supreme Federal Court) minister Alexandre de Moraes.
