Foxborough, Massachusetts.- The New England Patriots were perhaps one step away from overtaking the Miami Dolphins.
However, today the Patriots lost 15-10 to the Dolphins after rookie wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk’s jump on a game-winning touchdown with 1:02 left was reversed following a review.
The Patriots committed 12 violations and allowed 193 rushing yards to a Miami team that came in averaging 97.8 yards rushing through its first four games. New England is tied for the worst record in the NFL at 1-4 and has lost four in a row after beating Cincinnati in the opener.
“I think there’s no question we’re tough, but we’ve got to be better from an execution perspective,” head coach Jerod Mayo said. “I would also say that over the course of the game, our fundamentals started to slip.”
Likewise New England’s judgment, which was questionable at best on the final play of the game. With no timeouts, with the ball at the Miami 36-yard line, quarterback Jacoby Brissett completed a 25-yard pass to tight end Hunter Henry. The Patriots didn’t get another chance with the game clock expiring before Brissett could get another play.
“We must play better. There is nothing magical we need to do. We just have to play better. We must execute better. We have to play using our fundamentals better. We have to do all the little things better,” Brissett said after failing to surpass 200 yards passing for the fifth straight game. “When we go to watch the video replay, it’s not about this person, that person, this play. “We just have to play better as a team.”
Mayo said the decision was the correct one to nullify Polk’s touchdown. It was a tough blow for Patriots fans, who later watched as the flag was thrown for a false start by Henry before fourth down from the Miami 12-yard line.
