Nunes, Mabel and Pimentel will compete in the 2nd round in São Paulo, Goiânia and Curitiba; the 3 governors are listed for the Planalto in 2026
The positive results of Ricardo Nunes (MDB), Sandro Mabel (União Brasil) and Eduardo Pimentel (PSD) favored 3 governors with plans to become President of the Republic in 2026: Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil) and Ratinho Junior (PSD). Nunes, Mabel and Pimentel guaranteed a place in the 2nd round this Sunday (October 6, 2024).
Nunes’ victory over Pablo Marcal (PRTB) for a 2nd round against Guilherme Boulos (Psol) reinforces Tarcísio’s strategy of having an ally at the head of the country’s largest city. The governor is one of the tipped to be the PL candidate for the Planalto Palace 2 years from now, since the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is ineligible.
What’s more, Tarcísio saw his candidate defeat Marçal, with whom he had a feud during the election, causing a split on the right.
In a hint to Marçal, Tarcísio said that “prefer a guy who doesn’t seal, works”. In response, Marçal stated that Tarcísio I would have to apologize to him if he won the election. The PRTB candidate nicknamed the governor of São Paulo “goiabinha”.
CAIADO AND RATINHO ALSO PLAY ALLIES
The governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado, also managed to place his ally, Sandro Mabelin the 2nd round in Goiás. Mabel will compete against the PL candidate, Fred Rodrigues, supported by Bolsonaro.
The 2nd round will feature a dispute between Caiado and the former president. The 2 have also been fueling a recent feud.
In September, Bolsonaro called Caiado “coward governor”. The Goiano countered and reaffirmed his plans for the Presidency in 2026.
The governor of Paraná, Ratinho Junior, is another who had a partial victory in the capital of his state. Eduardo Pimentel, supported by him and Bolsonaro, will run against Cristina Graeml (PMB).
ZEMA LOSES WITH TRAMONTE’S DEFEAT
The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeo Zema (Novo), was defeated in the election in Belo Horizonte. Zema supported Mauro Tramonte (Republicans), who came in 3rd place in the polls.
Tramonte led part of the polls in the electoral race. In the final stretch, however, he was overtaken by Bruno Engler (PL), which included Bolsonaro in some of its campaign events.
Zema was even criticized by Carlos Bolsonaro, son of the former president, for not supporting Engler in the dispute.
