Map 1: the surroundings of Israel
Israel, October 7, 2023
More than 1,200 Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants raid Israeli farming communities bordering Gaza and unleash carnage in kibtuz such as Nir Oz, Be’eri, Netiv Haasara, Kfar Aza, Zikim and Ofakim. They attack a police station in Sderot and several military bases. Also Re’em, in whose surroundings the Supernova electronic music festival is held. The militants murder 1,139 civilians and 373 police and military personnel and kidnap 253 people who are taken hostage to Gaza.
Loop
Israel declares a state of war immediately after the kibbutz massacre and mobilizes an initial contingent of 300,000 soldiers and reservists. The bombings begin on the Strip. The next day, October 8, it destroys the first 426 Hamas targets, barracks, and rocket launch centers. After the first stage of bombing, the army undertakes the ground operation, with numerous episodes of urban warfare that continue to this day. Fighting and bombings have caused the death of more than 41,000 Palestinians, 15,000 of them militiamen.
Kahn Jounis
One of the largest cities and refugee camps in Gaza. It has been one of the points especially punished by the army. Below it is supposed to be the main underground operations center of the militia, where the mastermind of the attacks, Yahya Sinwar, may have taken refuge in the last instance, and where numerous hostages were held prisoner.
Rafah
Bordering Egypt, it was the last stable refugee camp and the main entry route for humanitarian aid until Israel established controls.
Lebanon
September 30, 2024. Israel crosses the Blue Line to attack Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon. It is estimated that a thousand people have died in the last two weeks in cross-bombing between the Shiite militia and Israeli forces, which this week recorded its first nine fatalities.
Beirut
Target of selective bombing by Israeli aviation. The attacks are especially focused on the southern suburbs, in Dahiye, where Hezbollah’s main stronghold is located. Its main leader, the cleric Hassan Nasrallah, died there on September 27 in an Israeli bombing.
West Bank
On August 27, Israel carried out its largest incursion into this enclave in at least two decades with the argument of eliminating “hostile” groups. In the last year, 600 Palestinians have died in clashes and altercations with Jewish forces and settlers, who have significantly increased their pressure to take over new settlements in this territory.
Syria
It is part of the so-called ‘axis of resistance’ also made up of Iran and satellites such as Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad or the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces. Historically, it has maintained a complex relationship with the Palestinian cause and Hamas. Haven of Islamic Jihad, after the start of the war in Gaza has launched rocket attacks on the Golan Heights. Israel has responded primarily with bombings against the airports in Damascus and Aleppo, arguing that they are the gateway for Iranian fighters and weapons.
Jordan
First Arab country to help defend Israel when Iran launched a wave of 350 drones and missiles on April 13 in retaliation for the Hebrew attack against the Iranian diplomatic headquarters in Damascus.
Egypt
Cairo has hosted the so far unsuccessful peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas. His Government has been one of the most insistent for Israel to open the doors to humanitarian aid.
Suez Canal
It is the shortest waterway to transport goods between Europe and Asia. Therefore, it is one of the main maritime trade corridors in the world. 18% of cargo passed through here in 2023, before the Houthis declared war on naval traffic. Now, trade has fallen between 64% and 80%. Many shipping companies use the Cape of Good Hope route for safety. The narrowest point of the canal is 30 kilometers and is the rebels’ favorite place for their attacks.
The Houthis
At war since 2015 against Saudi Arabia. They aspire to govern all of Yemen with the support of Iran. Since the outbreak of the war, Israel-Hamas announced attacks against ships crossing the Red Sea to Israel. They have also sent drones against Jewish territory.
EU OPERATION ASPIDS: Launched on February 19 to protect shipping, it takes place mainly in the Bab al Mandeb and Hormuz straits, as well as in international waters of the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. The mission headquarters is in Greece and frigates and destroyers from several countries such as France, Italy, Germany and Belgium participate.
GUARDIAN OF PROSPERITY: The United States and the United Kingdom also champion a naval operation in the Red Sea, to which governments such as Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Holland, New Zealand and South Korea have joined.
Yemen
It is another of the open fronts with Israel in the Middle East conflict. A third of the country is dominated by the Houthis, who have declared war on commercial ships sailing through the Red Sea.
Iran
He leads the so-called ‘axis of resistance’. Support the militias that attack Israel. The countries of the region and the West, led by the United States, are trying to avoid a direct war between the Islamist regime and the Jewish power, the consequences of which are unimaginable. This past October 1, Tehran launched 181 missiles against Tel Aviv and other cities, most of which were neutralized, in the largest aggression recorded so far against Israeli territory.
Qatar
