In recent days, European countries have been called to vote for the imposition of definitive additional duties on electric cars built in China. Overall, ten governments voted in favor of giving the green light to the definitive tariffs, including Italy and France, while five governments said they were against, led by Germanytwelve finally abstained, including Spain. And speaking of Germany, the number one of the main German car manufacturer expressed his opinion on the topic.
The position of Blume, CEO of Volkswagen
Let’s talk about Oliver BlumeCEO of Volkswagen, who in an interview with the German Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag spoke out against the imposition of this type of duties. “Instead of punitive tariffs, it should be a mutual recognition of investments – his words reported by Reuters – Those who invest, create jobs and partner with local businesses should benefit when it comes to rates.”
Chinese anti-electricity tariffs
In short, Blume is open to a different solution from the one adopted a few days ago: in his opinion, the EU should proceed with the adaptation of planned tariffs against electric vehicles built in China to account for investments made in Europe. The definitive additional duties, in fact, are expected to cost car manufacturers that produce in China and import into Europe billions of euros more, and are also destined to be imposed starting next month and for five years. And there is a further alarm bell according to Blume: the hypothesis of one counter-response by China, which could damage European manufacturers in some way.
