Race 2 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia starts at 12.40 in Monza (live Dazn and www.carreracupitalia.it). That is, the grand final as we arrive after a chaotic and hard-fought Saturday tormented by penalties and with a classification that remained sub judice after the appeal of the winner of race 1 Iaquinta against the penalty that the stewards had given him after the race for a cut in variant.
This being the case, with yesterday’s second place the Masters leader has consolidated his leadership (by a lot) and today the South African from Team Q8 Hi Perform has the opportunity to definitively close the accounts for the title by starting from pole position.
His pursuers are far away. In fact, De Haan will sit alongside him on the front row, the poleman of race 1 who was then effectively eliminated by Ten Voorde on lap 3 who will be looking for revenge, as well as points for the Target Competition team, which was unable to close the accounts yesterday against Fungenzi Racing despite the latter not being able to finish the race with either of the two cars.
Ten Voorde was precisely the one who triggered the contact with De Haan, also leaving the scene and also taking an 8-place penalty on today’s starting grid. Thus, the reigning champion will not be able to defend the 2023 title from third place on the grid, but will only have to sit on the sixth row, 11th.
Klein, on the other hand, also mathematically still in the running (at least as long as Iaquinta’s appeal “holds up”) will start in the third row from fifth place behind Bertonelli and Gray, but after the post-race drive through paid yesterday for an early start The French double champion is forced to hope above all in the events.
With Masters currently at 189 points (9 difference), Ten Voorde at 166 and Klein at 156, it is clear that for the latter two the first objective to achieve will still be to win game 2 and then see what happens.
And whoever wins race 2 in the Michelin Cup will probably be the 2024 champion of the category, given that the chase for the title is now a play-off between De Amicis and Fenici, with the latter still leading on 116 points (but with 6 currently to be discarded ) and the reigning champion at 111. In fact it is zero to zero!
In short, a real grand final with the overall title, Michelin Cup and Team still to be assigned, while the Rookie title is the only one that ended yesterday, thanks to Zendeli. Even though in the race it was Kalle Rovanpera who triumphed in the category of first season drivers in the 911 GT3 Cup, truly convincing in his comeback from 21st to the final sixth place overall and first among the Rookies.
And today the Finnish two-time rally champion, making his debut in Monza in a Porsche with the Prima Ghinzani team, will start on the eighth row from 15th position. Below, the complete results of the qualification with the times valid for the grid that will be made up at the start of race 2 today.
