The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro are investigating the alleged poisoning of two children. One of the victims, a 6-year-old boy, died. The boys were admitted to the Del Castilho Emergency Care Unit (UPA), in the north of the city, on Monday, the 30th.
According to the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Health Department, one of them arrived at the unit with a cardiorespiratory arrest and was resuscitated, but did not survive. The cause of death has not yet been released.
The other boy, aged 7, was also treated and, after his condition stabilized, was transferred to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, where he remains hospitalized in serious condition.
The boys were schoolmates and, according to family members, they had fallen ill after eating a candy offered by a stranger on the street, in the Primavera community, in Cavalcanti, in the north of the city.
The case is being investigated by the capital’s Homicide Police Station and is being conducted under secrecy. Images from a security camera that recorded the children moments before they started to feel sick are being analyzed.
According to the delegate responsible for the case, Marcus Henrique Alves, on BandNews FM radio, the autopsy identified granules of a brownish substance in the victim’s stomach and trachea. Similar material would have been found in the tests carried out on the boy who remains hospitalized.
