After what was the GameCube, it is considered that nintendo abandoned the console war to focus on creating unique products that are capable of reaching a large audience. With the opening of the Nintendo Museum, Shigeru Miyamoto was questioned about why the Big N stopped being part of this competition, something that has to do with the company philosophy.
In an interview with The New York Times, Miyamoto pointed out that this decision has to do with the perspective of Hiroshi Yamauchi, president of Nintendo between 1949 and 2002, who pointed out that the Big N was not made to compete against Sony and Microsoft. This is what he commented:
“Back in the day, Yamauchi told us that we weren’t good at fighting: ‘We’re weak, so don’t pick a fight with other companies.’”
In another talk with Famitsu, Miyamoto pointed out that although the company has no plans to compete directly against Sony and Microsoft in the field of technological advances, still believes that there is room to innovate and explore new paths in this industry. This is what he commented:
“I think the most important thing is that people who visit this museum think that Nintendo is a company that has nothing to do with competition in the video game industry or with the cutting-edge technology that people usually talk about. Of course, we carry out technological research. In the past, analysts and others have said things like ‘Why isn’t Nintendo focusing on networking?’ or ‘What about cell phones?’ or ‘Why not use the latest generation chips?’. However, if people calmly look at the exhibitions, they will realize that, in reality, we have been working on these things all along. But Nintendo has a history of waiting for the right time to release products, releasing them only when we think the time is perfect. I think that is clear through the museum and helps build trust in Nintendo. For our shareholders it also serves as a kind of medium and long-term perspective, showing that they can trust us to manage the company correctly.”
Not competing in the console war has helped Nintendo focus on its strengths and combat its weaknesses. without dedicating their efforts to creating the most powerful console on the market and spending years and years developing a single game. On related topics, Nintendo eliminates another Switch emulator. Likewise, the company attacks YouTube channels that show emulation.
Author’s Note:
This is the best. If Nintendo focuses on creating the most powerful hardware on the market and creating AAA experiences like those of Sony and Microsoft, not only would it lose its essence, but it would not have the success it has enjoyed in recent years. One of the greatest advantages that abandoning the console war has given the Big N is the possibility of experimenting and failing, without this meaning its end.
