Mexico City.- This Saturday, federal authorities found the remains of an eighth worker at the “El Pinabete” mine, out of a total of 10.
They reported that during the underground search operations in the GWE10 gallery (west) the human remains corresponding to the eighth miner who was trapped in a flash flood reported on August 3, 2022 were seen.
“On a day marked by the efforts of the rescue teams, the protocol for the recovery of biological findings established by the Unified Command, made up of the National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC), the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), has been activated. , the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Coahuila de Zaragoza (FGEC)”, reported the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSyPC). The head of the CNPC, Laura Velázquez, explained that actions are being implemented to structurally reinforce the area by installing frames, which will allow, under strict security measures, to begin the recovery of human remains.
“This step is essential to continue the identification process and provide certainty to the families. Excavation operations continue in the areas indicated by specialists as those with the highest probability of discovery. The objective remains to locate and identify the two remaining miners trapped in the mine,” he added.
Last Saturday, September 28, rescue work at the “El Pinabete” mine, in Agujita, allowed the recovery of the remains of the seventh miner. In 2022, a sudden flood trapped 10 miners extracting coal in the “Pocito”, “El Pinabete”, and although the first days they worked to extract the water, new floods forced the authorities to rethink the rescue, and instead open a pit until reaching the galleries, where in December 2023 they began to locate the first bodies. The federal government will subject the recently found bone remains to a forensic examination and, once identified, they will first inform the next of kin and then make the results public.
