Trump’s defiant and much-publicized return to Butler, Pennsylvaniacomes exactly one month before the presidential elections on November 5.
On Friday, President Joe Biden warned about the possibility that the election could take place in a climate of violence.
This time security in Butler was much tighter, with sniper squads positioned in several surrounding buildings and a surveillance drone deployed overhead.
“There are a lot of disturbing things going on,” said Heather Hughes, 43, who traveled from New Castle, Pennsylvania, to attend the rally.
Trump had a clear lead in the polls after crushing Biden in a television debate in late June, and entered the Republican convention in Milwaukee as a political martyr.
Images of the former Republican president with a bloodied face, shaking his fist and screaming as he was dragged away by Secret Service agents quickly went viral and marked the campaign.
On Saturday, many Trump supporters wore T-shirts emblazoned with iconography from the assassination attempt, and some sported earplugs reminiscent of the bandage the mogul wore after the shooting.
Trump will appear in Butler alongside his running mate JD Vance, and billionaire Elon Musk said on his platform X that he, too, will address the crowd.
Just a week after the failed assassination attempt, the presidential race took a turn when Biden dropped out and was replaced on the Democratic ticket by Vice President Kamala Harris, who quickly regained ground for her camp.
Trump has tried to revive the incident, announcing his return to the place where he “took a bullet for democracy.”
Harris in turn traveled to North Carolina this Saturday in order to meet with first responders and victims of Hurricane Helene, which killed at least 220 people as it passed through the southeastern United States.
Trump has criticized the federal response to the disaster, alleging without evidence that the Biden-Harris administration redirected Helene victim assistance funds to migrants.
The Republican candidate plans to address his audience behind protective glass.
The focus on Butler will be on the Secret Service, which was ridiculed in July for failing to provide adequate security a few hundred yards from where Butler’s shooter managed to shoot Trump eight times before being shot to death.
