The new star of F1
In almost two completed seasons in Formula 1, both at the wheel of McLaren, Oscar Piastri he achieved a total of nine podiums and two victories, the last of which was particularly exciting in the challenge with Charles Leclerc in Azerbaijan. The Australian, previously champion of Formula 3 and 2 in the seasons before his debut in the top series, showed a coolness uncommon in young drivers.
Plates like the ‘Professor’?
An ability and a driving style that has pushed many fans to compare Piastri to a legend of Formula 1 and McLaren like Alain Prostnicknamed the ‘Professor’ and winner of four world championship titles in his career. Interviewed by Auto Motor und Sportthe 23-year-old from Melbourne expressed his opinion on this comparison: “It’s a comparison that honors me, especially because Prost was one of the most successful drivers in our sport – he explained – of course, I don’t have a complete picture of the battles between him and Senna because I wasn’t alive yet, but from what I hear or read about him, I actually see some similarities between the two of us. Prost has a very fluid driving style and is very precise in his work. I recognize it in myself too. I talked to him a few times when I was still at Alpine. It was very interesting to talk to him and he also gave me some advice.”
The limit in F1
Another element found in the two pilots is a relatively low number of accidents. In Prost’s case, the ‘Professor’ admitted that this was the result of always driving at 99.9%, while Piastri provided his own opinion on the issue relating to the limit: “At the time Prost was racing the cars were less reliable and less safe – he explained – exceeding the limit had much more serious consequences than today. Our cars are built a little more ruggedly, but the limit must be exceeded with precision. If you stay a tenth below, you are too slow. If you exceed it, the tires present you with the bill. It’s a fine line“.
