In Monza, Marvin Klein is the winner of race 1 of the last round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia, who will decide the overall title tomorrow in race 2 starting from 12.40 (live on Dazn) with both the Frenchman and Keagan Masters still involved, today 4 °, while Larry Ten Voorde sends poleman Robert De Haan into a spin resulting in the retirement of both and the possibility of confirming the 2023 title now reduced to a sliver for the Dutchman from Fulgenzi Racing.
In fact, Masters remains in the lead in the general classification, having led at the start of the race with Team Q8 Hi Perform thanks to the excellent starting point with which he overcame De Haan, while Klein now follows by a few points but has a small advantage in the moment game of “discards”.
The two-time French Target Competition champion, who found himself behind the Masters with De Hann and Ten Voorde out on lap 3 in the First Variante at the restart from the first safety car used on the first lap due to the exit of Brusa, Laurini and Felbermayr, on lap 7 he overtook his South African rival with a surgical Lesmo 2 maneuver and then led to the finish line, also managing another safety car in between, used on lap 9 to recover Schuring’s 911 GT3 Cup parked off the track.
The fight for the race podium raged for a long time between the leading protagonists with the winner Klein, Masters, Oliver Gray, Simone Iaquinta and Lirim Zendeli in the top-5 at mid-race and with duels won in comebacks, Iaquinta himself clawed one splendid second place, leading Prima Ghinzani’s 911 GT3 Cup to its best result of the season.
The two-time champion preceded Zendeli at the finish line, third and therefore also celebrating on the podium and winner of the Rookie classification, with the related title definitively put in the safe by the 25-year-old German of Ombra Racing, while his direct opponent Francesco Braschi has to settle for the 14th place at the finish line but enhanced by the fastest lap of the race, achieved right on the last lap in 1’48″310 with the 911 GT3 Cup of DInamic Motorsport.
Masters instead finished below the podium, fourth after being overtaken by his rivals in the First Variante at the restart from the second safety car on lap 11, a controversial episode because in this situation Zendeli could have cut the corner in the parallel duel with Gray, who in turn was below at the checkered flag he completes the top-5 with Ombra Racing.
Given the many close battles and the many “under investigations” shown on the monitor during the race, at the moment confirmation of the definitive top-5 will most likely have to wait for the work of the sports commissioners.
Among the great protagonists, it is worth highlighting the comebacks of Gianmarco Quaresmini, from P14 to P7 with Tsunami RT, and of the two-time rally world champion Kalle Rovanpera, good at not making mistakes despite the many duels and chaos experienced on the track and capable of recovering from 21st to ninth with Prima Ghinzani’s 911 GT3 Cup with which he is making his debut in Monza.
The two TDE standard-bearers Diego Bertonelli (sixth) and the young German Daniel Gregor (tenth) also finished in the top-10, while Janne Stiak finished ninth with the second 911 GT3 Cup from Target Competition which remained in the race after the exit of scene of the innocent De Haan on lap 3.
And it was also a battle in the Michelin Cup, where Alberto De Amicis, starting from category pole, leads until the finish line and with Ebimotors achieves a crucial success which now places him in an ideal position in view of the final race 2 in which the title will be awarded .
The number one rival remains Francesco Fenici, who with Raptor Engineering finishes on the third step of the podium, however also surpassed by the other Ebimotors standard bearer, Paolo Gnemmi. The home team’s comeback was brilliant, having started from the back of the grid after a mechanical problem prevented him from competing in qualifying.
