TV|A journalist from the Argentine newspaper La Nación noticed a connection between the president’s speech and an episode of his adviser’s favorite television series.
Argentina president Javier Milei gave a fiery speech at the UN General Assembly in New York on September 24, in which he strongly criticized the General Assembly approved a couple of days earlier futures contract.
Miley barked the agreement in his speech as, among other things, “socialist”. It draws attention to many future challenges such as climate action, gender equality, human rights and the regulation of artificial intelligence.
A self-described “anarcho-capitalist”, Milei was elected president of Argentina in November 2023. He has promised to reform the country’s economy by cutting government spending on everything.
Argentinian Editor of La Nación Carlos Pagni drew attention for one episode at the end of Milei’s UN speech.
He noticed clear similarities to the speech which The West Wing -television series protagonist, President of the United States Jed Bartlet held in the 15th episode of the fourth season of the series.
Of course, the similarity was covered by the language barrier, because Milei gave her speech in Spanish and the actor Martin Sheen’s played by the fictional Bartlet spoke English.
Still, the similarities are undeniable, as you can see by comparing the speeches, for example, in the video compiled by La Nación.
“We support freedom of expression everywhere. We support religious freedom everywhere. We support the freedom of learning for everyone,” says Bartlet in the series.
“We believe in freedom of expression for everyone. We believe in religious freedom for everyone. We believe in freedom of trade and we believe in limited government everywhere,” Milei said in his speech. The speech, reminiscent of the speech in the television series, continued even after this.
The West Wing -series was made for seven seasons between 1999 and 2006. Its main character, Josiah “Jed” Bartlet, is the president of the progressive Democratic Party.
He therefore has a completely different profile from Argentina’s right-wing populist president, Javier Milei, who visibly supports the former president of the United States and the current presidential candidate of the Republican Party Donald Trump.
La Nación journalist Carlos Pagni tracked Mile down The West Wing -connection to the president’s advisor to Santiago Caputowhich is of The West Wing the screenwriter by Aaron Sorkin admirer and is apparently watched seven to nine times in the series.
