Being in the mountains in bad weather can quickly become dangerous. A video shows a huge rock fall in South Tyrol.
Trafoi – For many Germans, South Tyrol is a popular hiking destination. The mountains are often more dangerous than many people expect. Time and again, holidaymakers underestimate their tours, and the rescue teams are constantly on standby because of careless mountaineers. But it’s not just the wrong equipment that can be dangerous for mountaineers, the mountains themselves can also be dangerous. The violence of nature can currently be seen on a video that shows a rock fall on the Ortler, the highest mountain in South Tyrol.
Danger in bad weather in the mountains – rock falls occur again and again
The massive rockslide occurred on Wednesday (October 3rd) around 6 p.m., local media report. Chunks of ice and rock thundered into the valley, and the cloud of dust was said to have been visible as far as Trafoi, a part of the municipality of Stilfs.
Rockfalls are not uncommon in the mountains; masses of stone repeatedly break from the peaks and thunder down. This year alone, a rockslide in Austria barely missed an alpine hut, and just a few days later a rockslide buried a popular hiking trail.
Even before the rockslide, the weather was bad on the Ortler, so there were no mountaineers in the area. Therefore, no people were injured and the mountain rescue service was not notified, it said. When the weather is bad, hiking in the mountains is very dangerous; a German hiker died in Austria, apparently because he underestimated the weather. He had previously made an emergency call himself.
