NYT: Poles are unhappy with the construction of an American nuclear power plant next to the Soviet one
Residents of the Polish district of Choczewo expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the American company Westinghouse, which plans to build a nuclear power plant (NPP) next to the same facility that was built by the Soviet Union. How found out journalists from The New York Times, the position of the Poles is unlikely to be taken into account by the authorities.
“The project has already disrupted the calm rhythm of rural life in Chocevo. Local residents are divided over the plan, with some welcoming the prospect of cleaner, cheaper energy and others horrified by the reactors on their doorstep.
According to local officials overseeing the project, “it’s completely normal that not everyone supports the construction of a nuclear power plant.” However, according to them, the work will still be carried out, since the nuclear power plant “will bring enormous benefits to local residents.”
The agreement on the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland, consisting of three reactors, was signed back in 2020. The cost of the work is estimated at $35 billion. The unfinished Soviet station “Zharnovets” is located about 16 kilometers away. It was built from 1983 to 1990 and was actually abandoned after the collapse of the USSR.
Earlier it was also reported that Washington would allocate billions of dollars for the construction of small nuclear reactors in Poland. The initiative was explained by the need to “protect against Russian influence”, as well as to fuel the development of the country’s economy.
