A phantom record
During Q2 of the Japanese Grand Prix, Marc Marquez he had managed to set the new track record at Motegi, in 1’42.868. However, the Spaniard’s time was rightly canceled because he had exceeded the limits of the runwaybut this sanction did not arrive – as often happens – in real time. Once he crossed the finish line and after seeing the excellent lap that had given him provisional pole, Marc Marquez has in fact slowed down to avoid taking further risksthus deciding not to embark on a further attempt.
Only then did Race Direction announce the cancellation of the pole lapthus moving Marquez back to ninth position, without giving the Spaniard the chance to improve his position. The Gresini team champion underlined that he had not nothing to complain about the merit of the penalty, but he had a lot to complain about the lack of immediacy of the report, which effectively prevented him from launching another fast lap.
The official explanation from the FIM
It was the one who spoke Race Director, Mike Webbwho admitted that a mishap occurred: “The runway limit sensor tripped immediately, leading to the automatic cancellation of the ride in question. The marshals immediately entered the data into the system, but unfortunately a software anomaly triggered an interruption to the process and made it necessary to manually cancel the lap, causing the delay in notification. It is the first time this has happened in thousands of infringements of track limits every season. The cause of the problem has already been identified and the system has been changed to ensure it does not happen again.”
