It’s no secret that the last few years have been difficult for Ubisoft, but 2024 will likely be the most difficult period in the company’s history. The complete failure of Skull & Bones and Star Wars: Outlawsas well as the delay of Assassin’s Creed: Shadowshave caused a drop of more than 50% in the company’s shares. Now, A new report has revealed that the Guillemot family would be considering the purchase of Ubisoft.
According to Bloomberg, Tencent Holdings Ltd. and the Guillemot family, founders of Ubisoft Entertainment SA, They are considering options that include a possible purchase of the French studio. The media’s anonymous sources have indicated that the Chinese company and the European owners have been speaking with advisors to help explore ways to stabilize Ubisoft and reinforce its value. Another possibility that has been discussed would involve an association to take the company private.
Tencent and the Guillemot brothers would not be the only ones considering a purchase or exit from the stock market, since some minority shareholders, including AJ Investments, have been pushing for Ubisoft to take one of these two paths as soon as possible. However, at the moment there is no guarantee that this will happen, and the French are still considering multiple options. However, the possibility of Tencent, who made a large investment in the company in 2022, buying Ubisoft along with the Guillemot brothers, is not ruled out.
So far in 2024 alone, Ubisoft shares have fallen 54% in Paris, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately €1.4 billion euros. Likewise, this is not the first time that there has been speculation about a possible purchase of Ubisoft, since in 2022 we saw something similar, but Tencent’s investment put an end to this conversation at that time. Currently, the Guillemot brothers have about 20.5% of Ubisoft shares, while Tencent has 9%.
We can only wait to see what will happen with Ubisoft, who are facing one of the most complicated periods in the company’s history. On related topics, Ubisoft will go on strike this month. Likewise, he has commissioned an investigation to find out what is wrong with the company.
Author’s Note:
Ubisoft is one of the biggest companies in the industry, and it’s kind of sad to see that we could be facing the end of the company as we know it today. This is the result of a production system that gives an almost complete focus to AAA, or even AAAA, developments, something that must change if they want to move forward.
