It’s from Larry Ten Voorde on Friday of the last round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia in Monza. As much as a free test held almost entirely on a wet surface counts, with the protagonists (and only a few) able to test on Michelin slicks only towards the end, the Dutchman from Fulgenzi Racing did not disappoint himself and started driving of the group improving constantly in the final laps up to 1’52″122 which placed him at the top of the time list.
Despite the light rain, the weekend of defense of the title won last year begins well for the reigning champion. In any case, his result remains far from the limits of around 49/49 and a half expected in qualifying (provided that the conditions of qualifying tomorrow morning are good in terms of temperatures).
Consistently the fastest on rain tyres, Simone Iaquinta, who completed 8 laps less than the Dutchman, concluded the session with the second best time at the wheel of Prima Ghinzani’s 911 GT3 Cup, just over a second behind. The Calabrian driver precedes Oliver Gray by two tenths, third with Ombra Racing.
In turn, the British rider, at the top of the Rookie rankings, is followed by the furthest behind (but today the gaps really matter relatively and also depend on the moment in which the lap was taken) Robert De Hann, in his first free practice in the Italian single-brand championship with Target Competition, and by points leader Keagan Masters.
Ten Voorde’s first rival for the title completed the round with 21 laps under his belt at the wheel of the 911 GT3 Cup of Team Q8 Hi Perform and preceded the new entry of BeDriver Huub Van Heijndhoven by just 2 thousandths, while at one only tenth, he chases the other contender for the crown Marvin Klein with the seventh fastest time.
The double French Target Competition champion finished ahead of Diego Bertonelli (eighth with TDE), his teammate Janne Stiak and Bayley Hall, the Australian who with BeDriver completed the top-10 with the record of laps completed in the session (26).
The drivers in the central group of the time list closed the day with similar times, with Kalle Rovanpera who, on his debut in Monza, measured up despite the less than ideal conditions and with rain tires placed a good 12th in 1’54″785 with Prima Ghinzani’s 911 GT3 Cup.
The Finnish two-time world rally champion finished between Gianmarco Quaresmini (one of the first to try slicks with Tsunami RT) and a lively Flavio Olivieri (Raptor Engineering), while in the Michelin Cup Alberto De Amicis, a bit like Ten Voorde between the Pros, with Ebimotors has opened a gap of almost a second on the direct competition, with Cesare Brusa (Prima Ghinzani), Paolo Gnemmi (Ebimotors) and the current leader Francesco Fenici (Raptor Engineering) following in order in the category.
Free practice in Monza went smoothly without even a full course yellow, but now we await qualifying tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 9.20, with the track expected to be dry and (according to current forecasts) sunny. And then in the afternoon, Game 1 of this crucial season finale will take place, scheduled for 3.50pm, live on Dazn and live streaming on www.carreracupitalia.it .
