EU countries have given their green light to the introduction of definitive additional duties up to 36.3% on Chinese electric cars in response to the huge unfair subsidies given by Beijing. This was reported by Ansa, which cites European sources on the sidelines of the vote in Brussels. Formally, it was not an approval but rather a “not failing”: the qualified majority to reject the Commission’s proposal on tariffs has not in fact been reached, and this means that the EU executive can approve anti-China tariffs.
Chinese anti-electricity tariffs
Overall, ten EU countries voted in favor of giving the green light to definitive additional duties on Chinese electric cars: these also include Italy and France. Five countries, however, said they were against it, led by Germany, while twelve abstained, including Spain. In this sense, i definitive duties on Chinese electric cars supported today by governments are for BYD at 17%, therefore unchanged compared to the proposal on provisional duties, Geely at 18.8%, tariff revised downwards therefore compared to the previous 19.3%, and Saic at 35.3 %, also in this case down compared to 36.6%.
Green light from the EU
AND Tesla? It deserves a separate mention as it was subjected to an individual evaluation. Also in this case, Ansa reports, the duty has been lowered compared to the provisional one, going to 7.8% from the previous 9%. The other producers who collaborated in the investigation will, however, be subject to a duty of 20.7%, down from 21.3%, while it will be 35.3% for the companies that did not cooperate, and even in this case we are faced with a declinefrom 36.6%.
Final downward approval
“The green light from EU countries to tariffs on Chinese electric cars represents a further step forward towards the conclusion of the Commission’s anti-subsidy investigation – says the European executive – In any case, let’s keep working hard with Beijing to explore a alternative solution which should be fully compatible with the World Trade Organisation, adequate to address injurious subsidies identified by the Commission’s investigation, monitorable and enforceable”.
