Google is testing a new feature that could help identify trustworthy company websites, with a view to improving users’ search experience and ensuring online safety. Some users have recently noticed the presence of a blue verification badge next to links from some companies, such as Meta, Apple and Microsoft, in search results.
This new feature appears to be an extension of the BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) system already used by Google to verify email senders in Gmail. The blue badge, displayed next to the website link, indicates that Google has verified the authenticity of the business, using a variety of signals such as website verification, Merchant Center data, and manual reviews.
When hovering over the verification badge, a message appears telling the user that Google believes the company is authentic. This information can help users avoid clicking on false or fraudulent links, which could lead to websites designed to steal personal data or spread malware.
The trial is currently limited to a small number of users, and it’s unclear when or if the feature will roll out globally. However, it represents an interesting step in fighting online fraud and protecting users.
The introduction of a website verification system in Google Search could in fact have a significant impact on online security, or at least on users’ perception of security. What do you think?
