French comic book artist Pierre Christin has died at the age of 86, says a French newspaper Le Monde.
Born in 1938, Christin was one of France’s most famous comic artists. He is considered one of the most important screenwriters in the world of comics, because in his time and thanks to him, the subject areas of comics have broadened.
Sorbonne University-educated Christin was a political scientist who moved in the 1960s Stateside. There he worked for a time as a professor of French literature at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
His first comic Le Rhum du Punch was published in the French comic magazine Pilote in 1966. Shortly after returning to France, Christin founded the Department of Journalism at the University of Bordeaux in the late 60s.
Pierre Christin was especially known Valerian-from the space adventure series he created his friend by Jean-Claude Mézières with in 1967. In Finland, the series, which is considered one of the classics of science fiction comics, is now known as Valerian and Laureline. The series is still very popular in the French-speaking world.
Defined by Christin himself Valerian’s into a combination of fantasy and sociology.
“I don’t like a cartoon that has nothing to say, but I do like entertainment,” said Pierre Christin for HS while visiting the Helsinki comics festival in 1998.
Luc Besson in 2017 directed a film based on the comic Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (Valérian et la Cité des mille planètes). The visually spectacular sci-fi adventure was the most expensive film ever made in France.
In addition to Valérian science fiction comics, Christin scripted comics for numerous artists. Christin is known in Finland Valerian– especially along with adventures Enki Bilal of comic albums made with, such as Brotherhood of Revenge (1979) and Hunting trip (1983).
Brotherhood of Revenge was one of Christine’s own favorites.
“I think it was a game-changer because that album pushed comics forward as a form of expression,” Christin said in an interview with IS in 2020.
The multi-awarded comic artist also collaborated with, among other things Jacques Tardin, by Raymond Poïvet, Jijen, by Annie Goetzinger and Daniel Ceppin with. He has also written screenplays and science fiction novels.
