Mexico City.- President Claudia Sheinbaum carried out a remote evaluation this Thursday on the effects registered in the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca due to the passage of Hurricane ‘John’.
The President led the working meeting from the National Palace, accompanied by the heads of the Secretariats of National Defense, Navy, Interior, Infrastructure and Communications, as well as Territorial Development.
At the meeting, the Chief Executive held links with the Governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, and with the Governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara. As announced this morning, he reported that work is already underway on the repair of the pumping systems and that the census of victims continues, by the Ministry of Welfare.
“We had an evaluation meeting about the effects in Guerrero and Oaxaca of Hurricane John, we are working on the repair of pumping plants to supply drinking water and on the census to serve the population. We will continue to inform,” he posted on his social networks .
The President acknowledged that, after the damage caused by Hurricane John, none of the water systems in the port of Acapulco work, because they were flooded. He explained that, after learning the diagnosis, he instructed Sedena and the National Water Commission (Conagua) to try to provide the service in the affected areas through pipes. “There are four pumping systems that operate in Acapulco, none of the four are working, they are flooded; so, in the meantime, the population is being served with pipes,” he said. “On Wednesday, the Secretariat of National Defense agreed to provide more pipes, Conagua too, to support, and also to ask for some other entities that can support the water supply.” The President explained that it will be necessary to carry out work and adjustments to raise the pumping facilities and prevent them from flooding again. “And we will support Acapulco in two ways: one, so that the pumping systems operate as soon as possible, and to do work so that the pumping systems can be raised so that in another flood, if it reaches occur, they will not be affected again,” he said. Sheinbaum announced that, in the medium term, the rehabilitation of the port will continue with attention to the hydraulic system, drinking water supply, sanitation, water treatment plants, river desilting and construction of embankments, which are essential to avoid new effects, when heavy rains are recorded. The President issued instructions to the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) to repair the affected roads and, in particular, the one that connects with the landfill where all waste from the port is transported. “The other is the highways, the roads, particularly a bridge on a road that leads to the landfill in Acapulco, where communication is currently interrupted. The Secretary of Communications is taking all measures so that that bridge can be repaired,” he pointed out. He said that the road will be reinforced to prevent future damage with the increase in river flow. “There will be additional reinforcement,” he said, after confirming that the Welfare Secretariat is already carrying out a census in the most affected neighborhoods, in order to provide support for homes. He recognized that, in addition to Acapulco, in other affected municipalities on the coast, the mountains and in the Mountains, the help of Sedena will be required to address the landslides and collapses that left them cut off. “Wellness is also going to serve all these populations, in addition to the fact that the Defense is already serving with pantries so that they can have what they need for food,” he indicated. The President announced that the Secretariats of Tourism and Economy, as well as Fonatur, will convene businessmen to hold work meetings and continue with the rescue of Acapulco.
