Just at the beginning of the week, South Korean President Yoon threatened that North Korean use of nuclear weapons would mean the end of the regime. “Should North Korea attempt to use nuclear weapons, it will face a decisive and overwhelming response from our military and the South Korea-U.S. alliance. This day will be the end of the North Korean regime,” Yoon said in his National Armed Forces Day speech on Tuesday.
In September, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un presented a uranium enrichment facility to the world for the first time and spoke of wanting to increase the stock of his nuclear weapons “exponentially”. The Stockholm Peace Institute Sipri estimates that North Korea has around 50 nuclear warheads. However, this is only a rough estimate; the exact number is not known.
The country is subject to far-reaching UN sanctions and import bans because of its nuclear program. The last known nuclear test took place in 2017.
