The game was suspended in the 56th minute, shortly after Nacional scored 2-0 in their favor, through Marino Hinestroza. Junior fans located in the north stand of the Atanasio Girardot stadium attacked the green fans who were in that sector of the stage and stole a cloth.
The response of the Nacional barristas was violent and that generated serious excesses that left 25 injured, including a police officer. The match was suspended due to lack of guarantees.
After what happened, The Disciplinary Committee of the championship issued strong punishments this Wednesday: Nacional was given the game as lost 0-3, sanctioned with six games behind closed doors and imposed two fines totaling 40.3 million pesos.
Junior was punished with six games of partial closure of the Roberto Meléndez stadium (southern and western stands) and will have to pay 13 million pesos.
Junior denied any relationship with the fans who rioted
Junior de Barranquilla issued a statement this Thursday in which he distances himself from the fans of his team who started the riots in Medellín.
“Junior FC SA has no relationship with the individuals who participated in the disturbances in the match in question, did not facilitate the transfer or provide tickets to the people who caused violence,” the club said.
“These actions do not represent the fans of Junior FC SA or the values of the team, which promotes fair play on and off the field, as well as respect for rivals and the fans,” he added.
Regarding the Committee’s decision to award the points in dispute, the Barranquilla club stated: “Junior FC SA respects the decisions of the bodies established for the resolution of conflicts under the current regulations, in this case literal h) of article 83 of the Code Sole Disciplinary, which clearly establishes that the responsibility for the suspension of the match falls on the organizing club if, due to factors under its control, the match cannot continue.”
After citing other games in which points were also awarded on the desk, Junior added: “These precedents show that the recent performance is not extraordinary nor does it deviate from the established criteria for the application of current rules, but they also reinforce that safety is priority and that the organization of events must focus on the well-being of all attendees.
