The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, stated this Thursday, 3rd, that 2 thousand gambling sites will go offline in the coming days because they have not obtained authorization to carry out operations in the country. The latest list released by the ministry shows that 93 companies with 205 betting houses received approval to operate in Brazil.
Haddad participated in a meeting alongside the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and other ministers to discuss the regulation of betting, given the escalating concern about the social and economic impact of online betting games. The minister’s statement was recorded by the Palácio do Planalto’s press office and released to the press.
In his opening speech, the minister clarified that, to date, 10 ordinances have been issued to regulate betting operations. “These are ordinances that talk about technical issues, what is fair play, certification, financial issues, the mandatory use of the financial system, prohibition of credit cards, among others”, he explained. The ordinances also deal with user monitoring, “CPF by CPF”, he said.
Haddad reiterated that betting games are a “new challenge” in the virtual world and have been addressed by the government with the best techniques, which have been well received by the sector and experts in the field. He also said that, in addition to what has been dealt with by the Treasury, it is necessary to listen to other ministries, such as Social Development and Health, to complete the regulatory process.
Bolsa Família card cannot be used
The executive secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Dario Durigan, stated that President Lula authorized restrictions on payment methods for online betting, which may include the Bolsa Família card.
In an interview with journalists after the meeting at Palácio do Planalto, the Minister of Social Development, Wellington Dias, said that the government will present its own mechanism to avoid the use of social benefit cards for betting payments.
Dias said that the government will not adopt discriminatory actions against Bolsa Família beneficiaries, highlighting that initiatives that reach the public benefiting from the program will also be expanded to the general population.
He argued that half of the country’s adult population makes bets of this type, while the share of Bolsa Família beneficiaries playing is 17%.
“It’s not reasonable for us to go into this and want to demonize the Bolsa Família beneficiary,” he said.
Health will reinforce actions against addiction
The Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, stated that the ministry will reinforce prevention actions and psychosocial care for game addicts. According to her, an ordinance will be issued by the government to strengthen joint work in search of measures that mitigate problems related to betting.
