At least 18 people have died in the bombardment that the Israeli army carried out on Thursday night on the Tulkarem refugee camp, in the north of the occupied West Bank, according to figures from the Ministry of Health of the Palestinian National Authority. (ANP). This is the worst attack carried out in the last 24 years, according to official Palestinian sources. Among the victims are women and minors, denounces the spokesman for the Palestinian Presidency, Nabil Abu Rudeina, who has described the attack as an “atrocious crime” by the Israeli occupation forces. The army claims that in the attack it has eliminated a Hamas leader and other “terrorists.”
At least one bomb hit a popular cafe in the Al Hamma area of the refugee camp after being dropped from the air, according to the correspondent in the area of the official Palestinian agency Wafa. Emergency and health services went to the scene to rescue and treat the injured, who were transferred to the Thabed government hospital. The Red Crescent also transferred injured and fatalities to health centers.
“The crimes that continue to be perpetrated by the Israeli occupation authorities will not bring security or stability to the region. Instead, they will lead to more violence and will not force the Palestinian people to give up their legitimate rights,” the statement added. Abu Rudeina also blames the United States authorities for the “continuous aggressions that Palestinians are suffering in the last year.”
The target of the bombing was a Hamas official in Tulkarm, Zahi Yaser Abd al-Razeq Oufi, whom the army and secret services consider eliminated along with other “terrorists,” according to a statement. Israel blames Oufi for various attacks in the West Bank, especially against Jewish settlers.
The Tulkarem refugee camp, and Nur Shams (both next to the city of Tulkarem), as well as Jenin, are two of the places in the West Bank that are suffering the most from army attacks in the current war. So far, the deaths in the West Bank due to attacks by Israeli occupation troops amount to more than 700 since violence intensified in this territory a year ago in the shadow of the war in Gaza.
