At least 18 people have died in an Israeli airstrike on the Tulkarem refugee camp in the West Bank, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said late Thursday.
The Israeli armed forces confirmed that they had carried out an attack on Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank. In its statement, Israel described the attack as a joint operation between the country’s air force and the internal intelligence service Shin Bet.
Resident of Tulkarem Start Sroji said Israel had hit a cafe in a four-story building.
“Many people are in the hospital,” he added, and guessed that the number of victims of the attack would probably rise.
The village of Tulkarem and the refugee camp, located in the northern part of the West Bank, were one of the targets of a major operation carried out by the Israeli Armed Forces at the end of August.
Acts of violence In the West Bank have increased since Israel began its military operations in the Gaza Strip in October last year. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, more than 700 Palestinians have died in the West Bank as a result of Israel’s actions in less than a year. Israeli authorities say that at least 24 Israelis have died in the West Bank during the same period.
Israel has occupied the West Bank in violation of international law since 1967.
