The echoes of the strong sanctions continue for the riots at the Atanasio Girardot stadium on September 26, especially for the strong punishment that Atlético Nacional received as the organizing club of the match against Junior de Barranquilla.
According to the criteria of
This Thursday, the president of Nacional, Sebastián Arango, rejected the penalty imposed by the entity’s Disciplinary Committee on his club: six dates behind closed doors, a match lost due to “retirement or resignation” and two fines totaling 40.3 million weights.
The manager announced that he will make use of the resources for reconsideration and appeal and that he will go to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (TAS), if necessary, to reduce the punishment and return to Nacional the points it won on the field.
The game was 2-0 in favor of the local team when Junior fans attacked local fans and then, after a cloth was stolen, the green bar reacted violently.
President of Nacional cited two antecedents of different decisions of the Committee
Arango wondered why Nacional’s points had been taken away and cited two previous decisions by the same Committee. On September 21, 2022, Deportivo Cali fans invaded the field of the Doce de Octubre stadium in Tuluá and attacked their own club’s coach, Mayer Candelo.
On that occasion, the court’s punishment was for the Cali fans. “The Committee rejected the application of article 83 and therefore did not sanction the Cortuluá Club with defeat due to withdrawal or resignation, given that a decision to the contrary would be openly inviting the other fans to commit serious acts of violence, in order to benefit the club that they follow”, was published in the resolution.
Another similar decision of the committee was made after the events that occurred on August 19, 2023, in the match that La Equidad and Junior tied 0-0 at the Metropolitano de Techo stadium. That day, from the stands where fans identified as the visiting team were, they threw objects after the annulment of a Junior goal and one of them hit the oriental referee assistant, Elkin Echavarría. On that occasion the local team was not punished either, but a partial sanction was imposed on Junior.
This time, the Committee decided to remove the points from Nacional, despite the fact that the incidents were caused, in principle, by Junior’s brava, according to the resolution issued this Wednesday, and held the local club responsible for what happened.
A case similar to the September 26 game occurred on April 23, 2022, when a serious fight broke out between Unión Magdalena and Junior de Barranquilla fans, at the Sierra Nevada stadium in Santa Marta. That time there was an invasion of the field and those involved in the brawl ripped out dozens of chairs. There was even a dead fan.
The Committee’s decision on that occasion was the same as the one it just made: it gave the points to Junior (the game was 1-1 in the 73rd minute, when the match was suspended) and closed the Santa Marta plaza for 10 dates. .
