Red Barrels, the development studio of Outlast seriesannounced that his computer systems were hit by a hacker attackwith the criminals they have 1.8 TB of data stolen. The company explained that “As soon as the event was detected, the necessary measures were taken to protect the systems and the information they contain.” Furthermore, the company contacted a group of cybersecurity experts to investigate what happened.
Lots of data compromised, but not of gamers
The parties affected by the data theft were contacted immediately, as were the relevant authorities. The company’s employees received additional support as a precautionary measure.
Red Barrels later explained that Player data was not compromised by the attackbut work on internal projects has taken a hit. “We will do our best to follow our roadmap, but unfortunately some things will have to be postponed.” The developers explained, reassuring that they will share more information as soon as the situation becomes clearer.
Red Barrels then said that it took what happened so seriously that it wanted to strengthen its security measures. After all, it is necessary to do so, given that it currently has to support a live service like The Outlast Trials, in which the management of user data is fundamental.
According to an anonymous source familiar with the situation, the hacker group responsible for the crime is known as “Nitrogen” and appears to be recently formed. MP1st also received a list of the compromised information: credit cards, HR data, game builds and the complete source code of at least Outlast 1 and Outlast 2.
