Bold design, sporty shapes, technology and electrification. The Cupra Terramar, protagonist of our preview test drive, completes the range of the Spanish brand and does so with an SUV that fits into one of the most competitive segments in Europe. Faithful in style and philosophy to the brand’s DNA, the new model offers complete content and optimized driving dynamics. Today we are in Barcelona to try out the new Cupra Terramar for the first time but before telling you how it goes, let’s take a closer look at what it is like outside and inside the passenger compartment.
Exterior design
From the Autodrom de Sitges-Terramar to the world: the name chosen for this SUV is not accidental but brings with it an important legacy given that it shares an identity with the historic circuit near Barcelona where the brand was born in 2018. new Cupra Terramar is 4.51 meters long, has a height of 1.58 meters, a width of 1.86 meters and a wheelbase of 2.68 meters. At the front, the shark nose immediately stands out, making the front part very expressive. Also standing out here are the new headlights with three triangles, the new light signature for the brand, LED Matrix with high definition technology. The Cupra logo is framed between two ribs which make the bonnet muscular and better define the proportions of the car. Instead of the classic grille, in the lower part of the front there is a functional structure that highlights the sporty soul of this model. The alloy wheels are available in sizes from 18 to 20” while at the rear we find the Cupra logo, illuminated as well as the Terramar lettering and a generous extractor which integrates perfectly with the design of the rear, lightening it overall. Thanks to the possibility of sliding the rear seats, the load capacity can start from 602 litres. The color palette will include the shades Dark Void, inspired by the plasma color of the Cupra DarkRebel showcar, Fjord Blue, Glacial White, Cosmos Blue, Timanfaya Grey, Midnight Black and Graphene Gray as well as two matt colors Century Bronze Matt and Enceladus Gray Matt.
The interiors of the new Terramar
When you enter the passenger compartment you immediately notice the sporty soul already evident from the external stylistic details. The enveloping racing-style seats and the 3D motif that embellishes the dashboard and the central tunnel surround a refined and tech environment. Behind the steering wheel there is a 10.25″ digital instrument panel while in the centre, cantilevered, we find the 12.9″ touchscreen of the infotainment system which offers integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, in addition to the assistant dedicated vowel. Not only sportiness but also attention to sustainability, with the use of materials such as Seaqual Yarn obtained from plastics recovered from beaches and seas but also the dynamic fabric, made from 73% PET and recycled clothing. There are also many copper details, from the Cupra logo in the center of the steering wheel, to the interiors of the doors and elements of the dashboard. The central tunnel, like a spine, pushes towards the rear, here we find some functional buttons and the plate for induction charging of the 15W smartphone with refrigeration system.
The range of Cupra Terramar engines
The range of engines is very broad, with three different technologies and five engine options: from the TSI petrol to the Hybrid (mild-hybrid) variant up to the e-Hybrid, the PHEV. The purely endothermic version is offered with a 2.0 engine with two power levels, 204 HP and 265 HP for the Terramar VZ, both with 7-speed DSG gearbox and 4Drive all-wheel drive. The mild-hybrid version is equipped with 48 Volt technology and uses a 150 HP 1.5 petrol engine, the real innovation in terms of engines introduced by this model. Finally, the plug-in hybrid, available with 204 and 272 HP for the VZ. The 1.5 petrol in this case is combined with a 19.7 kWh battery which guarantees a full electric range of over 100 km. The battery can be recharged up to 50 kW with rapid and alternating current systems or wallboxes up to 11 kW.
How’s the new Cupra Terramar e-Hybrid?
Even though it is an SUV whose shapes wink at families, the dynamic DNA inherent in the brand remains a must. And so the Cupra engineers did specific work to optimize the MQB EVO platform to adapt it to the dynamic driving characteristics that are a distinctive feature of the brand: the structure was lowered by 10 mm compared to other applications, the progressive steering to increase control and agility as well as the DCC system for dynamic ride control with specific shock absorbers. Thanks to a specific camber of the front axle, the Cupra Terramar also promises optimal grip when cornering at high speed. Optional are the six-piston Akebono brake calipers with larger drilled discs to also improve braking performance. The comfort is therefore that of a family car but the reactivity and agility, even at higher speeds, are those of a sports car. Consumption is also excellent, with the plug-in hybrid protagonist of our test drive which in purely endothermic mode stands at 6.4 liters per 100 km.
Price and Limited Edition for the America’s Cup
The new Cupra Terramar range also includes the exclusive Limited edition Terramar America’s Cup, in just 1,337 examples. The competition logo has been laser printed on the central uprights and is also featured on the seat labels. There are 20” alloy wheels and the Encedalus Gray Matt lyre. This version will be available with the VZ configuration for the 272 HP plug-in hybrid and the 265 HP petrol. The first deliveries of the new Spanish SUV will begin in November, with the price starting from 42,250 euros for the mild-hybrid and rising up to 59,550 euros for the 272 HP plug-in.
