3 days before the 1st round of the municipal election, the president of the TSE says that voters should not bring “ideological unpleasantness” to the polls
The president of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), minister Cármen Lúcia, defended in the Electoral Court session this Thursday (October 3, 2024) that this year’s elections should take place with “democratic tranquility and responsible civics”.
3 days before the 1st round of the municipal election, which will be held on Sunday (Oct 6), Cármen also stated that voters should not deposit their ballots at the ballot box. “life or ideological unpleasantness”.
This was the last TSE session before the 1st round. The TSE president’s speeches come after episodes of violence in the São Paulo electoral race, in which 2 debates ended with aggression between candidates and advisors.
“We do not expect there to be practices of offense, violence, or unacceptance of differences, because it is through these differences that we achieve plurality, which is a constitutional right for everyone”he said.
To this end, the minister said that the Electoral Court has already taken the necessary measures to avoid disruptions on election day, with the aim of guaranteeing voters’ movement and free access to polling places.
Among the measures taken by the Court are those to avoid difficulties with bad weather or any type of obstacle for voters to reach the polls.
In September, the TSE even signed an ordinance with the Ministry of Justice establishing rules for the actions of the PRF (Federal Highway Police) on election days, on October 6th and 27th (the latter for cities with a 2nd round).
According to Cármen, the rules serve to prevent the State from “get in the way” citizens’ right to vote.
In 2022, during the elections, an episode involving the PRF led to the former director of the corporation being arrested for carrying out operations in the Northeast that allegedly prevented voters from voting in the 2nd round – in which the dispute was between the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
