Biologist Trofimova: May beetles woke up in September near Moscow due to the heat
The activity of cockchafers in September, which was recorded in the Moscow region, is associated with warm weather. The invasion of insects in the capital region was explained by Olga Trofimova, associate professor of the department of general biology and bioecology of the State University of Education, reports Life.ru.
As a rule, chafers are active from late April to mid-June. However, this year the year of insects passed with a great delay. Last spring they appeared only at the end of May, and there was no mass summer observed. In September, the weather corresponded to May indicators – the temperature was seven degrees higher than normal.
“If the weather is warm, the beetles may begin to fly in the fall, which is what we are seeing in 2024. The males always come out first. If the females also manage to emerge, the beetles will mate and lay eggs,” Trofimova said.
Earlier, agronomist Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told how to fight cockchafers in the country. According to her, light traps will be an effective way to get rid of pests.
