Typhoon Krathon made landfall in southern Taiwan on Thursday, the island’s weather official said. The typhoon made landfall in the Kaohsiung area around noon local time, bringing with it mudslides, flooding and dangerously strong winds.

In addition, the typhoon made it difficult to put out the devastating hospital fire in Pintung. The fire itself was reportedly unrelated to the storm.
The typhoon was expected to weaken quickly after landfall, but residents of Kaohsiung were advised to seek shelter and remain there until the storm has passed the area. Schools, shops and offices remained closed on the entire island for the second day on Thursday. According to the Ministry of the Interior, nearly 10,000 people had been evacuated across Taiwan.
Previously classified as strong by the local measurement system, the typhoon calmed down to moderately strong the night before Wednesday.
The island is used to tropical storms that often occur from July to October, but according to experts, climate change has intensified them.
