Judge Janine Otálora will propose today that the re-election of Alejandro “Alito” Moreno as head of the PRI, derived from a reform in the tricolor’s statutes, be invalidated.
The proposal will be presented before the plenary session of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) where the Magistrate will ask to dismiss a challenge presented by “Alito” against a resolution of the INE that invalidated the statutory reform of the PRI.
This reform allowed the re-election of the PRI leader for four more years. This draft sentence requires the vote of at least three Judges. The last votes of the plenary session of the Court have been dominated by the bloc made up of President Mónica Soto, Felipe Fuentes and Felipe de la Mata. Otálora requires the vote of two Magistrates from that group for its proposal to prosper.
On September 12, with seven votes in favor and four against, the General Council of the INE invalidated the statutes of the PRI, so, in fact, the re-election of the national leadership was annulled. Given this, the PRI challenged before the Superior Chamber.
According to dissident PRI members, Judge Janine Otálora’s proposal proposes discarding said appeal, so if approved, the INE’s decision would be confirmed. However, in recent months his proposals for controversial issues have not achieved the votes of the majority bloc in the Chamber.
