In 2023, the import of footwear through individual shipments on digital platforms (known as “minimis”) reached an amount of 4 billion dollars without the corresponding payments of tariffs to the detriment of the national industry, according to estimates by the National Chamber of the Footwear Industry (Canaical).
Mauricio Battaglia, president of the organization, said that shipments from some companies whose products enter as parcels for less than $50 do not pay import tax.
“Companies like Shein and Temu import billions of dollars into Mexico, damaging the national industry and leaving a big hole in the public treasury,” he stated. Known as ant import or “minimis” is the massive arrival of products by parcel that enters the country through an individual scheme, without payment of taxes.
