Wolfs – Lone Wolves is a 2024 film written and directed by Jon Watts and starring Brad Pitt And George Clooney. It was distributed at the last Venice International Film Festival, but did not have a release in cinemas, arriving directly on the Apple TV streaming platform on 27 September.
Two “lone wolves” forced to collaborate
Global superstars George Clooney and Brad Pitt reunite for an action comedy. Clooney plays a professional problem solver hired to cover a high-profile crime, but in the same place where he is supposed to solve the “dirty” problem, meets his “colleague” (played by Brad Pitt) that he has never seen in his life. By decision of a mysterious figure from above, the two “lone wolves” are forced to work togetherand for them it will not be an easy undertaking, both due to the different modus operandi of each and their apparently different characters.
Despite the diatribes, they will try to get the job donebut as it should have been a simple resolution of the problem, something big hidden takes over that suggests some sort of conspiracy, and their evening will go totally out of control. The two will also have to investigate the matter thoroughly.
A film that deserved to be released in theaters
The question is: because a film like Wolfs was not brought to theaters cinematic? He would have deserved it hands down and, mind you, here Not we are talking about a masterpiece. It is by no means a perfect film, but the way it was made shows that it was initially designed for the theatre.
Apple is trying to scale back theatrical releasesfollowing previous box office flops of films like Killers Of The Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese and Napoleon by Ridley Scott, and wants to focus on very specific films. However, he should have dared a little more with “Wolfs” and released it in theaters, because it is a product with all the potential to attract the general public.
Some directors, like Scorsese, argue that streaming platforms have ruined cinema. There would be discussion about this, but for now we focus on the fact that the platforms are just one more way of seeing films, and that they have allowed many people to see films that they would not have been able to see in the theater. But you can’t beat the theater experience, and there are films that deserve to be seen in a theater. Wolfs is one of thosedesigned to entertain, amuse and involve. Now we analyze the various reasons why he deserves a chance.
The Pitt-Clooney couple is a guarantee
We start with the protagonist couple made up of global superstars George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Over the years, Clooney and Pitt have accumulated a lot of film experience and have even become two great friends in lifeand these two factors are noticeable in Wolfs. The two worked great together on stage, and they have crazy chemistry. Even here, where they play two characters who don’t get along very well with each other. More than seeing two actors acting, It’s like seeing two friends constantly teasing each otherand this exchange works and is entertaining throughout.
Here, the two “Lone Wolves” do the same job, but they have two modus operandi and two different ways of doing things which lead them to often clash, including jokes and insults. But it is this exchange of jokes that is entertaining and these differences between them that it leads them to know how to be on stage and to act in the best waycomplete with tension and curiosity felt by the spectator with whom he will share the company for the entire duration of the film.
The right couple for the right film, a film that combines comedy and action well. This combination, mixed with the thriller atmosphere, the right tension and the curiosity to discover what is behind the events shown, form the right recipe to make “Wolfs” a film accessible to anyone and capable of attracting the general public . Not a very complex undertaking, and you can cite many examples of products that have done the same thing in the past, but Jon Watts understood what the public wanted, and gave it to them.
After directing three films on Spider-ManWatts wanted to come back down to earth a bit with a well-written and well-directed film, with rather simple and consolidated direction. Thattypical noir atmosphere and the funny comedy they entertain from start to finish and the curiosity remains with the viewer throughout.
Small gaps
However, we are not talking about a masterpiece, but more than anything it is fair to define it as a good entertainment product capable of surprising more than expected.
If you have to find a defectis in rhythm a little too accelerated which is felt in some scenes, resulting in some explanations made unclear on some narrative elements. The accelerated pace, however, is the representation of the fulcrum of history: that there’s no time to waste. What the two “lone wolves” do does not require tranquility, and therefore we must act quickly. The meaning is all there, but that acceleration that you feel every now and then is a little cumbersome and there is the risk that at the end of the viewing, you are left with some questions and confusion about a couple of narrative implications.
Does the ending open up a sequel?
The ending could open up a possible sequel, because it is free to interpret, and does not entirely give a sense of conclusion. The question is: would it be necessary? Because the doubt lies in this: was an extension of the running time and clarity on some points enough? Or could a possible sequel settle the questions that remain? We’ll see this later, but in the meantime Wolfs is an entertaining film not to be missed.
