Two flashes and nothing more
Mexico a year ago, the Miami Sprint at the beginning of 2024: these were the two flashes of Daniel Ricciardo in more than one overall season in F1 since taking over from Nyck De Vries before the summer break in 2023. The Australian driver once again saw his F1 experience come to an end in Singapore, this time most likely permanently .
Helmut Marko he explained that Red Bull’s plan was to bring Daniel Ricciardo back alongside Max Verstappen, but the plan did not materialize because Ricciardo’s performances were not up to par: “No one would have given Ricciardo a second chance, only we did – Marko’s words in the usual post-race column hosted by the newspaper speedweek.com – Racing Bulls was just supposed to be a stopover for Ricciardo, but he proved he had neither the speed nor the consistency to return to Red Bull. Only in Mexico a year ago and in Miami in the Sprint this year were there glimpses of the Ricciardo we knew, but his lightning-fast overtaking has never been seen again”.
The examples of Oliver Bearman and Franco Colapinto did not go unnoticed in the eyes of a great decision maker and supporter of young drivers like Helmut Marko: “All these examples demonstrate that young people deserve an opportunity, you don’t need 3-4 years of experience in a minor team to aspire to a prestigious team. Mercedes made the same choice we have made several times in the past.”added Marko in reference to F1’s promotion Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
