According to an analysis conducted by the Kantan Games agency, based on data collected by CESA, the PC gaming market is carrying out a huge growth in Japanbeing factual quadrupled in the last 4 yearsfrom 2019 to 2023.
This is a notable and progressive change, apparently, for the Japanese market, historically more linked to the console sector but which is evidently opening up to the PC world with impressive speed, reaching around 1.6 billion dollars during 2023, exclusively for software.
The data, as explained by the analysis, may be low compared to the results recorded in other markets, but it represents a real revolution as far as Japan is concerned.
The difference between console and PC is narrowing
As can be seen from the graph below, the increase from year to year is constant, although with different degrees, having undergone a clear acceleration especially from 2021 onwards.
The PC went from representing 5% of the overall gaming market in Japan in 2019 to covering the 13% in 2023out of a total of 12.7 billion dollars, again regarding software.
Once again, it must be considered that this is a market historically linked to consoles in an almost exclusive manner, except for a few niche users, therefore an increase of this kind signals a obvious change in taste and approach by Japanese users.
As demonstrated by the graph below, again by Kantan Games and signed by analyst Serkan Toto, it emerges that the mobile market still represents the vast majority of the video game market, which in 2023 represented 66% of the total.
What clearly emerges is that the difference between console and PC is progressively narrowinggoing from 18% console and 5% PC in 2019 to 21% console and 13% PC in 2023.
At this point we are waiting to see what is happening during 2024, with growth that has likely continued throughout this year and could lead to further interesting results.
This may also explain the decline of non-Nintendo consoles in Japan: the Nintendo Switch audience clearly remains loyal to the console given that its exclusive games are essentially not found elsewhere, while it is possible that users will opt for a gaming PC instead than focusing on PS5 and Xbox.
