Chihuahua, Chih.- According to the annual marriage statistics of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), Chihuahua stood out in 2023 as the state with the highest number of marriages in which at least one of the parties was a minor.

Within this context, Chihuahua leads the statistics with 12 cases, which represents approximately 57% of the national total.
Next are Durango with 6 marriages, San Luis Potosí with 2 and Michoacán with one. This distribution highlights the concentration of these marriages in a limited number of states.
The marriage registry also provides information on the timing of these events; February was the most active month in terms of marriages of minors, registering 14.9% of the total, which suggests that many of these unions take place during this period.
This is followed by December with 10.1% and March with 9.3%. These data may indicate that certain months of the year are associated with specific traditions or customs that encourage these unions.
In the country, the trend of marriages in which at least one person is a minor has shown a marked decline over the years.
In 2014, 35,178 marriages of this type were registered, a figure that began to decrease drastically in the following years, with 24,338 in 2015 and 11,548 in 2016.
As of 2017, the numbers dropped considerably, reaching only 2,725 in that year; in 2018 the number was further reduced to 589, and in 2019 69 marriages were registered.
In 2020, the figure was 26, and in 2021 there was a slight increase with 43 marriages reported; In 2022, 32 cases were documented.
For 2023, so far, 21 marriages of this type have been registered, of which 12 correspond to Chihuahua.
The legal framework surrounding marriages of minors has changed in recent years; the restriction on marriage from the age of 18 has been present in the Civil Code of some states since before the promulgation of the General Law. of the Rights of Girls, Boys and Adolescents in 2015.
This law seeks to protect the rights of minors and promote their well-being. Since then, other entities incorporated the restriction into their civil codes between 2015 and 2019.
Additionally, the Federal Civil Code has also included this provision since 2019, reflecting an effort to establish a more uniform legal framework throughout the country.
