After almost a week, The Disciplinary Committee of the championship handed down a sentence and issued the sanctions for Atlético Nacional and Junior de Barranquilla, after the brawl that involved fans of the two teams and prevented the completion of the match they played on September 26. And the ruling is not without controversy.
According to the criteria of
In the long run, the most affected was Nacional, who lost the game 0-3. In addition, he must pay a fine of 40 million pesos and will have to play six games behind closed doors. Junior, for his part, will have a partial closure of the Roberto Meléndez stadium: six dates in the north and west stands and a fine of 13 million pesos.
The determination, which had generated great expectations, was in the hands of commissioners Luis Antonio Hernández (president), Wilson Ruiz and Jorge Iván Palacio – all three renowned jurists.
It should be remembered that, after Marino scored Nacional’s second goal for the partial 2-0 victory, Junior fans located in the north stand of the Atanasio Girardot stadium attacked the Nacional fans who were in the same stands. The locals responded and the fight spread to the western stand, as well as to the transfer areas and to the outskirts of the stage.
The Mayor’s Office of Medellín had already punished Nacional with two games behind closed doors and another two in the north stands, in addition to ordering the closure of borders for visiting fans.
The Committee’s considerations to give the game for lost to Atlético Nacional
Regarding the decision to remove the points from Nacional, the committee considered that “In its capacity as a local club, it did not oppose the participation of visiting fans, it was warned by the local authorities about the imminence of possible excesses, and despite this it continued to allow the entry of fans from the Club Deportivo Popular Junior, proving the commission of three (3) inappropriate conduct by spectators, consisting of: i) Throwing of objects, ii) Invasion of the playing field and, iii) Acts of violence against people.
Regarding the events that generated the excesses, the committee said: “Cultura de Fútbol reported that it showed a lack of logistics, being clear that the PMU was informed of the complexity of the match and the people who were going to be located mainly in the north stand. The confrontation begins when Nacional scores the second goal, the common fans who are located in the north stand and the Junior fans begin to throw things, and the Junior fans break the safety mattress and attack the common fans of the National, which caused the Los del Sur dissident called ‘The Pirate’ to come up with knives. When this happened, the Junior fans tried to take refuge in the western stand, but the people from Los del Sur who changed stands made the Junior fans stay in the middle, being attacked by both sides.”
Why was Junior sanctioned?
Regarding the behavior of the Junior fans, the court considered that “it is essential that the clubs that officiate as visitors make recommendations regarding their fans and followers, beyond the fact of whether it is under their effective control that such measures whether or not applied by the event organizer.”
Atlético Nacional has not made an official statement, but EL TIEMPO learned that it is already preparing the resources for reconsideration and appeal to try to have the sanction reduced.
