One of the most interesting and in some ways revolutionary innovations of Monster Hunter Wilds compared to past titles is that players will be able to take on the hunt two weapons instead of just one, with the ability to switch between them in seconds. Naturally, this new gameplay dynamic required some Major changes to the loadout systemparticularly regarding skills and jewelsas explained by the trio represented by Ryozo Tsujimoto, Kaname Fujioka and Yuya Tokuda of Capcom during an interview with Multiplayer.it.
The biggest doubt of the fans is precisely related to the functioning of the skill system. For example, if I have a set with specific skills for the Long Sword will it become completely useless when switching to a Heavy Crossbow? The solution for Wilds was to move offensive abilities from armor pieces to weapons. This way you will always have the right ones active regardless of the weapon in use.
The Wilds jewel system will be more flexible
It doesn’t end there, because the developers have also revised and made more flexible the entire jewelry systemwhich for those who don’t know are objects that can be inserted into the slots on weapons and armor that guarantee passive offensive and defensive abilities.
“The first, very important thing to know is that the skills related to the attack, those that we can define as offensive, have been moved from the pieces of armor to the weapon in and of itself”, explained the Capcom team in our interview at Tokyo Game Show 2024. “This means that, having placed them directly on the weapon, even when you change weapons you will find yourself with the new one which already has all the skills relating to the attack ready. Essentially you will not find yourself with the offensive skills blocked by equipped armor or a weapon that has been removed.”
“The second important issue is that we have the entire decoration system was generally overhauled – that is, jewels – to allow you to have a much more flexible customization system about the different loadouts.”
Unfortunately, the Capcom team did not go into more detail on the issue, which will probably be at the center of one of the next in-depth analyzes on the game before its debut in stores, set for February 28, 2025. In our chat with Capcom we also talked about multiplayer lobbies and how they will be structured in the new chapter of the series.
