Fight for the 2024 F1 title
There challenge between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris will ignite the last six races of an F1 World Championship which only until a few weeks ago seemed to have no great points of interest, at least as regards the fight for the Drivers’ title. A show that also Bernie Ecclestone is preparing to enjoy himself, albeit from the armchair at home and no longer in the role – left at the end of 2016, with the sale of Formula 1 from the CVC fund to Liberty Media – of Supremo of the GP paddock. In a long interview given to the German TV station RTLthe 93-year-old English entrepreneur has in fact expressed his thoughts on the battle at the top between Red Bull and McLaren.
Ecclestone’s prediction
“I think it will be difficult for Max – said Ecclestone regarding the title fight – but I also believe that he already has the lead in the standings and that now he will just need a bit of luck, or possibly a bit of bad luck from Lando, to make it. So we’ll see, but I think that overall Verstappen will be able to win the championship. However, it must be said that McLaren is the fastest car at the moment and that I imagine it will win the Constructors’ title. They have two very capable drivers and a good car”.
There was also an opinion on Norris, who had some difficulty capitalizing on opportunities during the season: “I think Lando is doing what he’s supposed to do. Yeshe also made some mistakes that he is perfectly aware of and that he would have hoped not to make. But I think things are going pretty well for him now. He feels good with the car and with the team, so he has everything he needs to go fast”.
Champion plates of the future
The real talent that excites Ecclestone, however, is that of Oscar Piastriwho in only his second season in F1 is putting much more experienced drivers in difficulty by showing maturity and coolness. “Yes, I think Australian – he concluded – it really is a boy who has something magical. He will certainly be world champion within the next two years if his car continues to go as fast as it does now. I’m sure it will happen. I think he clearly stands out from everyone else. It would be difficult to choose one of the other young people who are emerging, but obviously it is also about how lucky they are to find themselves behind the wheel of the right car at the right time”.
