What happened in the last year at Epic Games
In September 2023studio Epic Games – which is best known as the creator of Fortnite and Unreal Engine – has suffered a major round of layoffs that has seen the departure of 830 employees, around 16% of its workforce.
Separately, Epic divested the Bandcamp music service platform and spun off most of SuperAwesome, a kids technology company. These were acquired by Epic Games in 2022 and 2020 respectively. Approximately 250 people left Epic Games as a result of these transactions.
At the time, Sweeney stated that Epic was spending “way more money than we makeinvesting in Epic’s next evolution and growing Fortnite as a metaverse-inspired ecosystem for creators.”
The company is now pushing even harder on its own platforms, reducing its commissions for Unreal Engine games launching immediately on the Epic Games Store.
