Kamala Harris’ vice debated with JD Vance; were asked about US support for the Israeli offensive in Lebanon
Governor of Minnesota and candidate for Vice President of the United States on the ticket with Kamala Harris (Democratic Party), Tim Walz (Democratic Party) stated on Tuesday (October 1, 2024) that Iran is closer to developing nuclear weapons because of the former president’s management donald trump (Republican Party). The statement was made during a debate organized by CBS News between Walz and the Ohio senator JD Vance, Republican vice presidential candidate.
The 1st question was whether they would support a preemptive attack on Iran. Neither of them answered objectively. This Tuesday (October 1), the country launched 180 missiles against Israel in response to the recent escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, which has intensified in recent weeks in Lebanon.
Kamala’s running mate defended Israel’s ability to defend itself as “absolutely fundamental”.
Walz, who is Jewish, recalled the attack by the extremist group Hamas against Tel Aviv, on October 7, 2023. “We will stand firm and there will be consequences”he stated.
NUCLEAR AGREEMENT
In 2015, Iran signed the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) together with the United States, China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and Germany. The agreement aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the easing of economic sanctions imposed by other countries.
The celebration of the plan was seen as a milestone in international diplomacy. However, in 2018, then-President Trump decided to withdraw the country from the agreement and reimpose severe sanctions on Iran. The decision caused an escalation of tensions in the Middle East and destabilized the relationship between the United States and Iran.
The current head of the North American Executive, Joe Biden (Democratic Party), tried to revive the agreement after taking office, but negotiations between the countries made little progress. Tehran demands the removal of all sanctions to return to the agreement.
Read other highlights from the debate between Walz and Vance below:
- abortion: Walz said the right to abortion is “basic human right”. Vance followed Trump’s thinking and reinforced that it is an issue that should be decided by the States, and not by the federation. “As much as democracy can be confusing at times, it is necessary for populations to [dos Estados] decide that”he said;
- migration: Vance accused the Democratic administration of allowing the United States to allegedly break the record for illegal immigration into the country and of “destroy the dreams of Americans”. The governor of Minnesota countered by saying that Republicans “they continue to blame immigrants for everything”;
- muted microphones: the Ohio senator and the Minnesota governor were silenced after the mediators contradicted JD Vance’s speech and were rebutted by the Republican. At present, the debate has become more heated and the CBS News used his right to mute candidates’ microphones;
- economy: the Republican highlighted Donald Trump’s economic plan as a solution to the rising cost of living in the United States. The Democrat, in turn, criticized the “trade war” initiated by the former North American president. Both highlighted the importance of reducing the cost of housing and taxes;
- democracy: Vance avoided the question about democracy and prioritized criticism of big techs which, according to him, tries to silence Americans. He highlighted the importance of freedom of expression and sometimes cited the 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution, used to defend this right in the country. Walz accused Trump of not being committed to American democracy and recalled the turbulent transition of power in 2021, when Republicans invaded the Capitol in protest of Biden’s inauguration.
