The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petrois visiting Mexico for the possession of Claudia Sheinbaum as president of that country. In one of the events, the Colombian head of state recalled his time in the M-19 guerrilla: “They did not think that a Colombian president could emerge from its members. It broke the coordinates. It is a bit my essence, but it did have one president. And now it has two because Claudia was a collaborator and militant of the M-19 in Mexico.”

In statements, Petro added that “for those who don’t like history, the M-19 has produced two presidents in America,” referring to Sheinbaum, who this Tuesday, October 1st, takes over as president in Mexico.
The statements of the president of Colombia have been echoed in the Mexican press. The titles in the newspapers of that country are: ‘Gustavo Petro links Claudia Sheinbaum to the M-19 guerrilla’, noted El Universal; ‘Petro says that Sheinbaum was a member of the M-19 guerrilla, ‘Reform’ pointed out; ‘Claudia Sheinbaum was a member of the M-19 guerrilla, Petro’ reveals, explained ‘Process.
Another medium like the ‘Informer’ titled ‘Claudia Sheinbaum, linked by Gustavo Petro to the M-19 guerrilla and ‘The Broken Chair’ wrote ‘Petro claims that Sheinbaum supported the M-19 guerrilla.’
These media outlets took up Petro’s statements, which added that members of that guerrilla took refuge in Mexico around the 70s and 80s, where they received help from some Mexicans, “among those Claudia”, as stated by the Colombian president.
According to the Mexican media, this supposed facet of Sheinbaum was until now unknown, since he has never publicly referred to these circumstances.
Although the president, in different scenarios, has boasted of his past as a member of the M-19, it is also true that for the majority of Colombians it has remained marked in their memory. the bloody takeover of the Palace of Justice (1985), with the consequent massacre of magistrates and officials of the judicial branch.
The excesses of some members of the Armed Forces in this difficult situation have already been tried and several are serving criminal sentences.
Meanwhile, the Colombian president is right when he says that today there is a Latin American leader from the M-19, and now he states that Sheinbaum has the same condition, who – according to Petro – in his youth helped some members of that guerrilla who were fugitives from justice to take refuge in Mexico. Until now, she has not flaunted her participation in those events.
And it is not by virtue of the M-19, but on the contrary, as many voices in Colombia have said, by virtue of the solid democracy that exists in the country, that a former guerrilla member of a violent movement today can fully exercise freedom of the Presidency. Those freedoms, that institutionality, that democracy – various sectors of the country have reiterated – are what must be praised and always defended.
Sheinbaum, who is an environmental engineer, becomes president of Mexico after being sponsored by the outgoing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. One of its main challenges will be to combat drug cartels and organized crime.
