Plan the transformation of Helsingin Kaivokatu into a public transport street is progressing.
The Helsinki City Environment Committee, which met on Tuesday, October 1, decided to approve the Kaivokatu environmental plan, which will be followed as a guide in the further planning of the street.
Member of the Urban Environment Board Otto Meri (kok) wrote about the decision in the message service X.
“The city environmental board has decided by a vote of 7-6 to close Kaivokatu to car traffic. The coalition’s motion to limit the use of the downtown service tunnel also for drive-through traffic was lost in the vote. Bad decision for Helsinki”, wrote Meri.
The plan the key content is that Kaivokatu would be closed to car traffic in front of the railway station, and the area would be developed more for pedestrians, cyclists and pedestrians.
2+2 lanes would be returned to Esplanades and an underground service tunnel would be developed.
The changes would be implemented gradually and over several years. Kaivokatu is initially planned for deck renovation starting in 2027.
