Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has become the first woman to preside over Mexico in two centuries as an independent republic. 62 years old and a left-wing scientist, the new president has been invested in an official ceremony in the Chamber of Deputies, before legislators, officials of the incoming Government and dignitaries from dozens of countries. In an image that overflows with symbolism, Sheinbaum has received the presidential sash from the emblematic representative Ifigenia Martínez, one of the first fighters of the leftist movement in Mexico. “I will govern for everyone. And rest assured that I will put my knowledge, my strength, my history and my life itself at the service of the people and the country,” she stated in her speech after being sworn in as constitutional president of Mexico. “I am certain that together we will consolidate a Mexico that is increasingly more prosperous, free, democratic and fair. “I’m not going to let you down,” he said.
The first president has incorporated the symbols of the feminist struggle into her political speech and has promised to lead an Administration that will give justice to Mexican women as a priority. “In 503 years of history [desde la Conquista española]For the first time, women became president. And I say we arrived, because I didn’t arrive alone, we all arrived,” she said. At her request, Sheinbaum has been received by a delegation strictly made up of female legislators. In giving her first speech, she asked: “I make a respectful invitation to appoint a president, with an ‘A’ at the end, as well as a lawyer, a scientist, a soldier, a firefighter, a doctor, a teacher, an engineer, with an ‘A’, because, As we have been taught, only what is named exists.” In the legislative chamber, the deputies and senators from Morena, the PVEM and the PT, the ruling bloc, burst into shouts of “president, president!”
Sheinbaum succeeds Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the founder of Morena and undisputed leader of the Mexican left, who has gone to the legislative chamber to present the presidential sash, the symbol of authority of the Executive. López Obrador leaves office with an overwhelming popularity close to 80% and has displayed his enormous influence until the last moment of his six-year term. In a single month he obtained the approval of the controversial reform of the Judiciary, which leaves the election of judges to the popular vote, and another to transfer control of the National Guard to the Army. The trail of those decisions has haunted the former president. The San Lázaro palace was surrounded by a metal fence and a strong police deployment, while a group of employees of the Judicial Branch demonstrated outside the legislative precinct. That is the foundation on which Sheinbaum seeks to build the —in his own words— “second floor of the Fourth Transformation.”
Already invested, Sheinbaum began her first speech as president paying tribute to López Obrador, who arrived first at the venue amid the hugs, kisses and requests for photos from the legislators, and who had a seat on the board of directors, where Ifigenia Martínez, Norma Piña —head of the Supreme Court— and Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the Senate. “History and the people have judged him: Andrés Manuel López Obrador, one of the greats. The most important political leader and social fighter in modern history. The most beloved president, only comparable to Lázaro Cárdenas, the one who began and ends his term with the most love from his people and, for millions, although he does not like to be told it, the best president of Mexico,” Sheinbaum has described. . López Obrador listened from his seat. The legislators and invited officials chanted: “It is an honor to be with Obrador!”
Sheinbaum referred to López Obrador as “president”, without realizing that she was already wearing the presidential sash, that the positions had changed. At some point he corrected himself and, with a smile, began to simply call him by his name. “You have asked us on several occasions not to unveil busts, nor to put your name on streets, avenues, neighborhoods or neighborhoods, nor monuments, nor to make large tributes. The truth is that it is not necessary, because you will forever be where only those who fight all their lives, those who do not give up, those who restore hope and joy reside. You will always be in the heart of the people of Mexico. “He retires from public life as a democrat,” he indicated. In the plenary session, there were legislators who shouted: “We are going to miss you, president!”, “Thank you for what you gave us!”, “You never failed us!”, “I love you so much!” Sheinbaum concluded: “Deep thank you, thank you, thank you forever. It has been an honor to fight with you. Goodbye, brother, friend, colleague Andrés Manuel López Obrador.”
The president, who has reached the most important position after 66 male presidents who preceded her, has reviewed some of the achievements of López Obrador’s six-year term in economic matters and social development. “I call on all of us to reflect, to evaluate with a cool head what happened during these six years, with hard data,” he challenged the opposition present in Congress. Sheinbaum has offered to respect the autonomy of the central bank and achieve a reasonable debt balance. “Rest assured that the investments of national and foreign shareholders will be safe in our country,” he guaranteed. Before representatives of Canada and the United States, Mexico’s main trading partners, the president – a scientist trained in energy sustainability – stated that the relocation of investments will be promoted (nearshoring) with a perspective of regional development and environmental care.
