John Amos leaves us at 84 due to natural causes: his son Kelly Christofer announced his death
Goodbye to John Amosiconic actor and much loved by television and cinema audiences. Amos passed away at the age of 84 in Los Angeles, of natural causes. The news was announced by his son, Kelly Christopher Amos, who in a touching statement shared the pain of losing his father.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1939 to Annabelle and John Sr., Amos had a remarkably varied career. After attending the Colorado State Universityhe tried his hand at boxing, winning the prestigious title Golden Gloves. Amos also attempted a career in American football, spending a tryout in 1967 with the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League. However, the call of the world of entertainment was stronger and led him towards the path that would give him immortal fame.
Amos became a known face thanks to his roles in popular television series of the 70s and 80s. The audience learned to love him before how Gordy Howardthe friendly meteorologist in the sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-1973), and then, above all, how James Evans Sr.the strict but loving father in the sitcom Good Times (1974-1976). Amos gave voice and face to the struggle of an unemployed father who tries to keep his family together despite economic difficulties. This role touched the hearts of millions of viewers.
One of the most significant roles of his career was that of Kunta Kinte adult in the famous miniseries Roots from 1977. A powerful narrative about slavery that earned him an Emmy nomination. This role cemented his reputation as a talented actor and contributed to his cultural and social influence.
Amos also shone on the big screen. We all remember him as Cleo McDowell in the movie The Prince is looking for a wife of 1988, father of the protagonist.
