Until recently, Iran was showing off high-tech weapons – now the mullahs’ regime may have fired these powerful weapons at Israel.
Tehran/Tel-Aviv – Iran’s expected attack on Israel hit the country early on Tuesday evening. Iran is said to be loud CNN attacked two airfields in Israel and the secret service headquarters with rockets. The headquarters is north of Tel Aviv. So far there are no reports of damage or injuries. According to its own statements, dozens of rockets fell on Israel. The attack was in retaliation for the killing of Hamas foreign chief Ismail Haniya, HezbollahSecretary General Hassan Nasrallah and an Iranian general, state television said. Only last year, Iran presented its own hypersonic missile for the first time: “Fattah” (Persian for “conqueror”).
Iran attacks Israel with missiles – apparently also with the hypersonic missile “Fattah”
Iran is said to have one of the largest missile and drone arsenals in the Middle East. In addition to a number of medium-range missiles, the mullahs’ regime also wants to have hypersonic weapons. These rockets fly low in the atmosphere and are maneuverable. The rocket’s high speed also makes it difficult for radar devices to target it. The trajectory of supersonic missiles is therefore difficult to predict and interception is difficult, even by modern missile defense systems. According to initial media reports, the high-tech “Fattah” rockets were also used in the current attack. This information has not yet been officially confirmed.
A few months ago, the mullahs’ regime presented its own hypersonic missile for the first time; the missile was presented by the Revolutionary Guard Air Force. According to the state news agency Irna, the “Fattah” will reach a speed of up to 18,500 kilometers per hour and have a range of 1,400 kilometers. This means it is able to overcome any air defense system in the region. These claims cannot be independently verified and no evidence has been provided to support the missile’s claimed performance.
The now deceased then Iranian President Raisi emphasized that the missile would strengthen the country and ensure “security and stable peace” in the region. In November, Iran announced that it would begin producing this missile, which could reportedly also carry nuclear warheads. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed concern about this development at the time.
Iran has numerous short- and medium-range ballistic missiles
According to the Arms Control Association (ACA) Iran’s short- and medium-range ballistic missiles include almost two dozen types with different capabilities – an excerpt:
- Shahab-1 (“Comet-1”) is the first short-range missile modified by Iran. The weapon is based on the North Korean Hwasong-5 with an estimated range of 300 kilometers.
- Zolfaghar (named after a famous sword) with a range of around 700 kilometers.
- Emad-1 (“Pillar-1”), a rocket under development that will be able to carry a payload of 750 kilograms with a range of up to 1,700 kilometers.
- The Sejil (“baked clay”) family – a rocket under development with a range of 1500 to 2500 kilometers.
Iran’s second attack on Israel within a year
In April, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) carried out a direct attack on Israel for the first time in the history of the Islamic Republic. The air force fired more than 300 drones, rockets and cruise missiles at their arch enemy. The attack was successfully repelled by Israel’s Iron Dome. Iran was reacting to the killing of high-ranking generals who were killed in a suspected Israeli attack in Syria.
