It sounds like a miracle: four people suddenly drive off a mountain road in their car. But the car lands back on its wheels.
Heiligenblut – The two couples from Vienna and Lower Austria were traveling in their Mercedes on the Großglockner High Alpine Road (Austria). On the route from Guttal towards Hochtor, a steep curve was fatal for the driver (71) and the three passengers (all aged 72) on board. But apparently all four had a very attentive guardian angel.
Right-hand bend 18 on the Großglockner High Alpine Road is fatal for the Mercedes driver
The 71-year-old from Vienna was behind the wheel when the accident occurred on Monday afternoon (September 30) at around 4:15 p.m., Austrian police said. In the right-hand bend 18 – the so-called “Magrötzenhang” – “the driver veered off the road to the left, whereupon the vehicle overturned several times over the steep terrain.” After about 40 meters the car came to a stop on its wheels. “All four occupants were able to exit the vehicle independently,” said the police.
Spectacular accident on Alpine road: rescue helicopter in action
“An oncoming vehicle driver started the rescue chain,” the police said. After initial treatment, the driver of the accident vehicle was flown from the C7 rescue helicopter to the BKH Lienz with injuries of an undetermined degree. The three other inmates were taken by the rescue team to the BKH Lienz “for clarification”.
After an incredible 40-meter fall, the cause of the accident is initially unclear
10 emergency services from the Heiligenblut Volunteer Fire Department were deployed for the rescue work. During the rescue work, the Großglockner High Alpine Road was closed to traffic for around 15 minutes. The FF Apriach – Großkirchheim and Winklern was also in action alongside the Red Cross and a towing company.
“A serious traffic accident probably occurred because of a medical problem with the driver,” writes the Heiligenblut fire department on Facebook. The car rolled over several times on steep terrain, injuring four people. The fire department would like to thank you for the good cooperation and wishes the injured people a speedy recovery. The police did not initially confirm what caused the serious accident.
The onset of winter recently caused closures on the Alpine passes in Austria, and the Großglockner High Alpine Road was also temporarily closed. (ml)
